Earthly Things

Olov Hartman. Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 1968. 235 pages.

Hartman, director of the Church of Sweden’s Sigtuna Foundation, has published five significant novels (three translated into English: Holy Masquerade, The Sudden Sun, Marching Orders) that deal with the struggle of faith and the meaning of grace. In Earthly Things, a series of twenty essays probes the relation between theology and culture, and the meaning of pastoral ministries (including treatment of confession and preaching). Some good probing is done on the meaning of Christian affirmation.
