Despair: A Moment or a Way of Life?

C. Stephan Evans. Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity, 1973. 135 pages.

Despair over death, over the collapse of morality, over loss of meaning, in feeling alienated: these are the motifs that Evans (professor of philosophy at Trinity College) talks about. He illustrates the pervasive moods of despair through examination of selections from Sartre and Camus, and from glances at American movies. Without falling into the oversimplification of Schaeffer, and with informed references to the insights of Kierkegaard, Evans presents a clear picture of the existentialist mood and how Christian affirmation confronts it.
